Insolvency statistics released for January 2025

The insolvency statistics released for January show that of the 1,971 registered company insolvencies:
- There were 269 compulsory liquidations
- 1,546 creditors’ voluntary liquidations (CVLs)
- 142 administrations
- 14 company voluntary arrangements (CVAs).
Individual Insolvencies
After seasonal adjustment, 9,706 individuals entered insolvency in England and Wales in January 2025. This was 3% lower than in December 2024 and 12% higher than in January 2024.
The individual insolvencies consisted of
- 592 bankruptcies
- 3,847 debt relief orders (DROs)
- 5,5267 individual voluntary arrangements (IVAs)
- The number of IVAs registered in January 2025 was 6% lower than the average monthly number seen in 2024. Bankruptcy numbers remained at about half of pre-2020 levels and were also lower than in January 2024.
- In the 12 months ending 31 January 2025, one in 413 adults in England and Wales entered insolvency (at a rate of 24.2 per 10,000 adults). This is higher than the rate of 21.5 per 10,000 adults (one in 465) who entered insolvency in the 12 months ending 31 January 2024.

Breathing Space Registrations
- There were 8,240 breathing spaces registered under the Debt Respite Scheme in January 2025. This is 1% lower than in January 2024. Of the 8,240 breathing space registrations, 8,150 were Standard breathing space registrations and 90 were Mental Health breathing space registrations. Between the start of the scheme in May 2021 and 31 January 2025, StepChange Debt Charity registered 60% of breathing spaces.
